History

About this graveyard

Ardcroney parish lies in the Barony of Lower Ormond. The graveyard, in Ardcroney village, surrounds the ruins of a combined Castle/Chapel that in medieval times was a residence of the Bishopric of Killaloe; the O'Hogans later became tenants and held it until the Cromwellian confiscation of 1652. The area has been inhabited for some 5,000 years — a neolithic grave mound dating from about 3200 B.C. stands on nearby land. Just over 150 headstones were copied; the oldest is to William Newstead Esq., 1749, and there is a Latin inscription to the Rev. John Magrath, a priest who died in 1784. A handsome monument commemorates Captain Thomas Walsh of the National Army, killed at Rearcross in 1922. The R.C. church across the road — whose grounds hold a penal-era Mass rock from Ballinamurra — contains further memorials, included here.
